The City of Toronto has passed a bylaw 29 - 12 to implement a tax on private billboards finally addressing the issue of illegally erected billboards that encroach upon public space without impunity and the revenue generated will be used for enforcement of the bylaw and also for investments in public art and other city beautification initiatives.
How did your councillor vote on this bylaw?
The general thrust of this new bylaw is completely in line with the City's existing Agenda for a Creative City and also supports the notion that city councillors represent the people who vote for them, not so much the large conglomerate companies who happen to do business in the various ridings. Infact a recent poll showed that 70% of the people surveyed supported the tax.
