!Chavez no se va!
In Venezuela on Monday February 16, beloved President Hugo Chavez won the majority of votes in a referendum which removes limits on political terms of office. Is this referendum result going to add fuel to Chavez' opposition fire? With misconceptions of 'dictator' and 'autocrat' already bandied about by elitist and/or one-sided media outlets should Chavez simply have been carefully been grooming a successor over his decade-long run as Venezuela's president?
Or will this referendum result allow Chavez to fully implement his governments' plan for Venezuela's various national, hugely successful social programs, exciting new tradition of
participatory democracy, and will the world get to see the full vision enacted for the Bolivarian Revolution?
Of particular note:
Federally, Canada also does NOT have limits on the number of terms a political leader can run for office; MacKenzie King was Prime Minister for 21 years, John A. MacDonald was PM for 18 years, as leader of the Liberal Party Jean Chretien ran and won three times for PM.
As long as they remain the leader of the party with the most seats in Parliament and the confidence of the House of Commons, Canadian Prime Ministers also have NO LIMIT to the number of terms they can spend in office. Canadian Prime Ministers are NOT ALSO the Head of State of Canada. Canada's head of state is the Governor General or the Queen.
The Venezuelan President IS also the head of state of that country.
The US President IS also the head of state for that country.
